These terms are often used interchangeably, however there’s a major distinction.
Renovation = restoring the existing structure and layout to a good state.
Includes: remove and replace existing surfaces and materials e.g. tile, carpet, paint, appliances, cabinets, trim, baseboard, doors, mechanical equipment, water heaters and light fixtures.
Remodel = reshaping the existing structure or space.
Includes: structural permits, removing walls, increasing ceiling height, reframing interior layout, altering the roofline, adding square footage.
Ensure when working with a contractor team that you use the correct verbiage. Any misuse of terminology may allude to additional scope that may be unintended.
